Rhinoplasty

We are our own worst critics and many times when we look in the mirror we see minor defects that we feel could be improved. If you have considered improving the appearance of your nose, London, Ontario’s Dr. Brian Rotenberg can help. His patients come to him with a variety of concerns:

• The nose is too small or too large

• There’s a hump or bump on the bridge of the nose

• Nostrils are too wide, too narrow or asymmetrical

• The tip of the nose sticks out too far, is droopy, too large, too small, too round, too boxy or bulbous

• Functional defects impair breathing (deviated septum)

Perhaps you can relate to one or more of these concerns. If you are considering rhinoplasty, or a “nose job”, book a consultation with Dr. Rotenberg. Both surgical and non-surgical options are available to help you achieve your desired result. A surgical rhinoplasty is done in the operating room under anesthetic. A non-surgical rhinoplasty uses dermal fillers to reshape areas of the nose. While this “10 minute nose job” will not change the size of your nose, it can change the contours and overall appearance.

During your first appointment, the doctor will photograph your nose and share with you an approximation of the new look of the nose by utilizing specialized morphing software. Dr. Rotenberg can help you decide what option is best for you.

Liquid Rhinoplasty FAQ's

How long is the recovery time?

There is no recovery time. Immediately following the procedure, you can return to your usual activities within 24h. You will see immediate results but allow 2 weeks for any minor swelling or redness to heal and final results to be seen.

Is liquid rhinoplasty covered by insurance?

Cosmetic rhinoplasty procedures are not covered by insurance plans in Canada, and are not covered by OHIP.

Uvulopalatoplasty

A lengthy palate or uvula is often a problem in snoring and sleep apnea. Uvulopalatoplasty surgery is a procedure intended to reduce or eliminate snoring by reshaping part or all of the uvula at the back of the throat to shorten it and reduce obstruction and snoring.

Is liquid rhinoplasty safe?

The dermal fillers used in a liquid nose job are naturally derived. Over time, they will break down and are reabsorbed by the body. Hyaluronic acid has been determined as safe and effective and has been used for decades for many corrective facial procedures.

What is the legal age to get a nose job in Canada?

We recommend you arrive at your appointment with minimal makeup on your face and none on the nose. Get a good night’s rest the night before and ensure you’re hydrated. Arrive on time with all of your forms completed. You do not need to remove any nasal piercings.

To prevent bruising during and after the treatment, we suggest avoiding blood thinning medications (ibuprofen, aspirin, etc.) for one week prior. Please consult with your doctor before altering your medication. We also recommend avoiding alcohol for 2-3 days before your appointment. This will reduce the risk of bleeding and bruising.

Major dental treatments such as root canals or deep fillings should be delayed until 2 weeks after your procedure.

How long will it take?

Well, there’s a reason it’s called the 10-minute nose job. The process will take approximately 10 – 15 minutes with no recovery time. With no anesthetic, you will be able to see the changes as they happen and then be on your way.

Is a liquid nose job permanent?

No. The results will last approximately 10 – 12 months. Over time, the filler will break down and be absorbed by the body. Many times, subsequent appointments do not require as much filler to achieve the same result. Sometimes, patients will use a non-surgical nose job as a “test run” to see if they would like to commit to surgical rhinoplasty.

If, for some reason, you are unhappy with the results, the process can be reversed by using hyaluronidase.

Surgical Rhinoplasty FAQ's

How long is the recovery time for a rhinoplasty procedure?

Each patient is unique and recovery time varies depending on the type of rhinoplasty and the extent of the facial surgery. While the acute recovery lasts approximately two weeks, complete healing can take several months. During this time, patients should avoid activities that can injure the nose.

Is rhinoplasty covered by insurance?

Cosmetic rhinoplasty procedures are not covered by insurance plans in Canada, and are not covered by OHIP.

What are the potential risks or side effects of rhinoplasty?

As with any cosmetic or medical procedure, there are a few small potential risks that are associated with rhinoplasty. Dr. Rotenberg will take the time to assess your nose during the initial consultation and explain these potential risks to you. Here is a list of some of the side effects you may encounter during the recovery period:

• Discolouration and swelling around the nose
• Various sensations such as numbness, itchiness, or discomfort
• Adverse reactions to anesthesia (it’s important to provide a complete list of allergies before the procedure)
• Infection if proper aftercare isn’t administered
• Some scarring or redness
• Nasal septal perforation (a small hole in the septum) – this is rare but is treatable in most cases
• Possible need for revision surgery
• Dissatisfaction with the end result
• Laboured breathing (which can be corrected through revision rhinoplasty)

What is the legal age to get a nose job in Canada?

The legal age to get a nose job in Canada can be as young as 14 or 15. However, there are a lot of individual ethical and physical factors that need to be taken into consideration. Clients under the age of 18 require parental consent if they’re undergoing a strictly cosmetic procedure.

It is necessary to undergo a comprehensive preliminary assessment to ensure the emotional and intellectual maturity of the patient. We also need to perform an assessment on the client’s nose to ensure that it’s fully grown before undertaking the procedure. If the patient’s nose is still in the growing and development phase, then the procedure will eventually be rendered a moot point.

At that age, gender is also a major qualifier. Facial features in young girls can be fully developed as early as 15 or 16 years of age, while teenage boys may have to wait until at least 17 or 18 to get a cosmetic rhinoplasty. There’s no maximum age requirement.

How do I prepare for rhinoplasty surgery?

Following your preliminary assessment, Dr. Rotenberg will provide you with a complete list of instructions to help you prepare for nose surgery. Here are a few things you should do to prepare ahead of time:

• Stock your fridge with foods that are easy to digest and eat (you may feel nauseous in the days after your surgery)
• Do your laundry – particularly your sheets because you will be bedridden for a number of days post surgery
• Ensure you have button down shirts available to reduce the risk of damaging your nose by putting on and taking off shirts over your head
• Stay hydrated at all times
• Take a shower the night before the surgery to remove all makeup and skincare products.
• Apply lip balm or petroleum jelly liberally following the surgery because your lips will be extremely dry
• You will need to arrange to have someone drive you to your surgery
• Don’t eat or drink anything after midnight the day before your surgery

Is rhinoplasty an outpatient or inpatient procedure?

Rhinoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis. You may need a few extra hours post-op for observation, but you most likely won’t have to stay overnight. You will not be able to drive yourself, so ensure you have someone to take you to and from your appointment.

Will fixing a deviated septum stop snoring?

In some cases, septoplasty surgery (correcting a deviated septum) can reduce snoring, but is unlikely to stop it altogether. Dr. Rotenberg does surgery specific for snoring as well (see www.sleepsurgeon.ca) and can discuss this with you during your consultation.

Is rhinoplasty a permanent procedure?

Rhinoplasty is permanent in the sense that as long as your facial features are fully developed, then your nose won’t change shape on its own. That being said, the nose and skin will continue to change over time as you age, and so sometimes a revision rhinoplasty is desired years after the original surgery. If you’re considering facial surgery, for functional or cosmetic reasons, London, Ontario’s Dr. Brian Rotenberg has the skills, experience and reputation to successfully complete the procedure. A nose job is more common than you may think and the end result can produce satisfaction and confidence.
